If I had a spinneret [May. 22nd, 2013|10:10 am]

If I ever meet the Wizard of Oz, I'll ask him to turn me into a spider. Here's a song about that.

I would hurry to the kitchen
with pedipalps a-twitching,
to see what I could get.
And when there I would eat all
the insides of every beetle,
if I had a spinneret.

And that's only the beginning;
it sets my head a-spinning
to see them in my net.
To the edge I would scarper
where I'd pluck it like a harper
if I had a spinneret.

Oh, I could catch the fly
that ventured near my web,
then another as the hunger starts to ebb.
I'd be an arthropod celeb.

And I'd tell the tale with recaps
from more than seven kneecaps
to everyone I met.
And I'd be the provider
of a web for every spider
if I had a spinneret.

a momentary reality check [May. 22nd, 2013|09:37 am]

[Tags|, , ]

We’re looking for somewhere new to rent, and I mumbled about a lovely place that costs an impractical, um, *checks conversion rate*, $2350 a month. This caused someone (that I have known since childhood, so while it was cheeky, well, actually, total strangers ask these questions too, so) to ask the following question, and since I wrote out the answer anyway, I thought I might as well post it.

“I thought successful authors like yourself made a lot of money? Am I way off base?”

Yes. :)

Here. I’ll talk some real numbers.

For example: my most recent 3 year average income is about $47K gross, which sounds pretty good. However, that’s with my best *ever* year of writing income as part of the average. If I take that year away and factor in something more normal, my 3 year average is more like $34K, which still isn’t half bad, but it’s not stupendous amounts of money.

But that’s gross. Before I ever even see that, 15% goes to my agent’s commission, which brings a more normal average year down to about $29K. Then you convert it to euros, which on average takes about 30% away from the take-home, which puts it at about €20K. It’s a living, but it’s not what most people would call a lot of money.

Furthermore, I write fast. Less fast now that I’ve had a kid, but I still write fast, around 300,000 words/3 books a year. So if you pretend the money you’re getting paid is for the book you’re working on right now (which is really not how it works, but that’s a different long story) that’s about $10K (or €6.7K) per book. And again, I write fast, so a 100K book (an average Walker Papers novel, for example) takes me 100 hours.

That makes my hourly rate look really good, even if you add another 50 hours on top of that for revision and editing and everything. But I rarely get to write a book in a straight shot, so it’s usually more like 6-12 weeks of work. I mean, I can and have and no doubt will again do 10-12 hour writing days for several days on end, but a more normal (pre-child) writing schedule was about 4-5 hours a day. Which is not, I realize, something to cry in one’s beer about. :) But the point is a great hourly rate doesn’t necessarily mean a lot of cash, because of how the system works.

The people you hear about who make a lot of money? JK Rowling, Stephen King, Stephanie Meyer, Michael Connolly? They’re the outliers. Writers’ lives and incomes are not like they’re portrayed in the media or movies. They’re the rock stars compared to the garage bands.

I just got a phone call, from someone purporting to want to know if I was teaching dance classes. I politely said no, that since accident/surgery we no longer teach, and that I was surprised that this number was still out there as someone to call about said classes.

Caller then said she got the number from our website. (Uhh, no you didn't, but I didn't say that). I told her that the website was there for informational purposes only, and has been for a few years. She once again said she got the number from our website. I checked.. not only is email mostly disabled (with exceptions for advise on sewing), there are no phone numbers on it.

Also, yes... it's been a few years, but I still recognize your voice, you silly twit. Still haven't grown up to be an adult?

Congratulations Britain, and congratulations, all humans of planet earth - slowly we are building a better, kinder, fairer, more loving world, despite all the daily evils we see that seem like evidence to the contrary. Slowly, I believe, the majority of educated people are doing the right thing, coming to believe and stand up for the right thing, on this issue at least.

New Cats - the tabbies [May. 22nd, 2013|02:10 am]

marlowe1
I got Gambit from a strange set of circumstances. My friend Jered tried to set me up with a woman that he thought I would like because I think we were both pro-Israel and converts. I think that was his reasoning. Apparently I knew her from LJ and her name was something like Jennifer Ray but she changed it to something Jewish (even though she never converted and she's the kind of person that gets blocked from conversion under the "it might be a side effect of the anti-psychotics" standard. I know it's unfair but there are enough crazy Jews in the world without importing some) and I pretty much saw no potential for that in the beginning. Yes, I know that it is unfair to judge someone based on mental illness, but when someone says that she's on medical leave and gets money from the state for mental illness, it's a little more serious than I am capable of dealing with.

But she was friends with a pet rescue place in Pennsylvania and they were trying to get Gambit adopted. Gambit is a two year old tabby who was abused. He got along great with Socrates until Socrates died. Socrates didn't fight him off, but Socrates was old and tired. He's making an effort with the rest of the cats.

Even better, by the time I was looking to adopt Gambit, Jennifer Ray was getting steadily more annoying. It's like I couldn't be on FB without her commenting on every single thing I wrote. Most of the time she was speaking in cliches but a lot of it was just nothing. A week before I was supposed to get Gambit, she took offense with my non-sadness at Aaron Swartz's death. So she wrote to Karen stating that I was making jokes about suicide (I kind of was) and that she couldn't recommend me for Gambit. So I got a couple other friends to recommend me. Karen stopped working with Jennifer Ray and I had the reason I needed to block the woman. If I just blocked the woman without the backstabbing, I would have felt bad about it.

So Gambit is still not coming up to me. He is really good at running away. For the first month, he was hiding in the box spring (Willamena is in the box spring now) but he started to get out and walk around. I am actually sorry for him concerning Socrate's death since he liked Socrates (it was hard not to like Socrates) and he wasn't afraid of him as he is of the other cat.

It's a slow process. Gambit has a lot of trust issues and he's not entirely jibing with the other cats (I actually got the other cats sooner than later due to the fact that Gambit was not going to cozy up to me for a long time and he needed the company as well). But now I have a cat toy which is a fake tail on a stick.

If he's sufficiently calm, I can get him to play with it when I'm holding it (he plays with other cat toys away from me) and if I am lucky, I can pet him with the fake cat tail. He's becoming more comfortable with me, but he's still running away. Hopefully, he will get over it, but whomever abused him did a great job of fucking him up. I hope the former owner has died in a nasty fire by now.

Health TMICollapse )

In equally annoying health news, I went to an allergist today and described my reactions to perfumes and flavorings. Her conclusion is that I'm essentially getting contact dermatitis on my tongue and throat when I inhale/ingest things I'm sensitive to. I noted that the problem had gotten a lot worse since I started taking the Zoloft; at first I thought it was related to the Zoloft-induced dry mouth, but that side effect has mostly gone away. However, upon Googling "contact dermatitis artificial flavor", I find this note in a case study of a woman who developed an allergic reaction to artificial cinnamon:

Contact allergies are common in the skin but rare in the mouth due to the protective role of saliva against the accumulation of allergens

Welp.

It's true that my mouth is still dry; it's just not dry enough to really bother me most of the time. In addition, the Zoloft continues to cause a bit of acid reflux, which is probably making my throat more sensitive to other irritants. Hooray! Bodies are fun.

Conclusion: once Readercon is over, plus a week to make sure there's no post-Readercon fuckery this year, I'm going to get my doctor and therapist's approval to go off the Zoloft. It's definitely been helpful, but I'm feeling a lot more settled, and most of my anxiety these days is related to--surprise!--being scared of food because I don't know when it's going to make my throat feel like it's swelling up. I keep being glad to have the Zoloft to help me deal with that, but it would be even better to not need to deal with it. In the meantime, lots and lots of peppermint candy (and a search for lemon or other citrus candies that have no artificial flavors or sweeteners, since citrus is naturally mouthwatering), and probably going back to taking Pepcid with the Zoloft.

Also conclusion: the allergist was not entirely useless, but pretty nearly. I mentioned the Zoloft dry mouth and she didn't say "It might be worth taking a closer look at that". She expressed surprise that Claritin appeared to help with the reaction but offered no suggestions for alternatives. Bah.

Jacob's Hands

A young man with the power to heal makes the mistake of healing an ambitious young lady. They both make their way to the Big City, where both of them are pretty much immediately corrupted by Big City. The healer eventually comes to his senses and flees back to the country.

Yeah, this was pretty bad. Several details differ from the story as described at wikipedia:

Speaking of Cinderella-If the Shoe Fits

Lurene Tuttle and Vincent Price tell each other with what they feel is the best version of Cinderella. Tuttle presents the romantic version, more or less the one most of us know, while Price presents what he feels is a realistic one, in which Cinderella is a crooked lady wrestler who uses "borrowed" jewels, a stolen car, her looks and a striking knack for advertising to win her man.

A lot of the discussion felt oddly familiar.

Okay. So we're just catching up on Game of Thrones--watching the last two episodes tonight, in fact--and as you might expect it's being an HBO show, with a lot of sex and it's just dawning on me that I think they haven't actually shown any sex that's consensual or uncreepy since Jon and Ygritte. Four episodes ago.[1]

They haven't even talked about it, unless Ygritte talking to Jon about his technique was three episodes ago instead of four. Instead we're getting Joffrey and Mero talking up their plans, and then there was Littlefinger trading Roz to Joffrey for a snuff session, and...

I am bored, and mildly grossed out.

Gonna back to cheering Sam, now.

[1] As I was about to hit post, I remembered that Robb and Talisa actually got a few minutes of cute naked screentime last episode. My mistake. So we are averaging one scene every two episodes over the last month, whooo.

At Transitions Online, Martin Ehl writes about the problems associated with formerly Yugoslavian Slovenia's well-managed, self-guided transition to capitalist independence. Was not enough changed?

After the declaration of independence in 1991, various formations composed of former communists who were careful about words such as privatization and foreign investment took turns governing the country. Yugoslavia's socialist legacy had a lot to do with that, but so did the concerns of a small nation, which had, for the first time, its own country and feared that outsiders would again steamroll over its history, culture, and economy – this time not militarily, but economically. Sometime in 1998, for example, I first heard the story of how the Slovenians were preventing foreign speculation by requiring that money into and out of the country could legally be transferred through only one state-controlled account.

A right-wing government took power only in 2000, with its banner wielded mainly by former dissident Janez Jansa, who is known for seeing plots everywhere. He himself was accused of secret arms purchases during the dissolution of Yugoslavia. This year, his government fell not because of economic problems, although they played a role, but because of suspicions of corruption among ministers and the prime minister.

Slovenia's shining image shows up in rankings of countries’ living standards and development. When we dig deeper into these indices, however, we can see the residue of the state-directed approach to the economy and the socialist attitude to the state as the hand that distributes full handfuls. For example, the Prosperity Index, compiled by London's Legatum Institute, puts Slovenia at 24th of 142 countries. But the worst evaluated of the eight categories is the economy, while the best is the educational system.

It's similar with the Catch-up Index, compiled by the Open Society Institute in Sofia, which judges whether and how quickly the former Eastern bloc countries are catching up with Western Europe. Of the four categories assessed Slovenia fared a shade better in quality of life than in democracy, governance, or the economy. It looks as if the Slovenians live well but have relied too much on their economic model working forever and even being able to grumble about their government, which, however, still controls most of the economy through state-owned banks and companies.

Just as Slovenians have a problem with privatization and opening up their economy to foreign investors, so it is in other areas. For example, a history-related time bomb has been ticking in Slovenian society, considered taboo all the way up until Jansa's governments that ruled after 2000. During World War II, certainly not all Slovenes stood on the side of Tito's partisans. Slovenia was divided during the war among the three occupying powers, and only much later Jansa and others began to talk about the massacres of tens of thousands of people from the so-called Slovene Home Guard – namely the units on the side of the Italians, Germans, and Hungarians, whom the allies in 1945 handed over to Tito's units along with the remnants of the Croatian Ustasha and Serb forces loyal to the exiled Western governments.
